Sabbatical Minister

Supervision by Board of Trustees via a small, appointed Sabbatical Committee

Appointment Period: 2 January 2018 – 18 June 2018 (or, as arranged)

Hours: 75% Time

Pay Range: ($48,000 – $77,000) Salary will be within UUA fair compensation guidelines for Midsize Church II, Geo Index 6 and based on ministerial experience

Overview: The First Unitarian Church of Oakland is a downtown urban church with a religiously liberal congregation of approximately 250 members and some 100 friends, that dates back to the mid-to-late 19th century. The congregation serves Oakland as well members from surrounding communities who find the vibrant atmosphere and urban setting the place to best practice their faith.

The congregation’s Parish Minister will be on sabbatical leave beginning in January of 2018. A temporary, part-time position Sabbatical Minister will serve the congregation from 1 January through 18 June 2018 in the areas of worship, pastoral care, and staff supervision.


  • Master of Divinity Degree
  • Ordained by a Unitarian Universalist Congregation
  • Experience with worship planning, pastoral care services, and congregational management.
  • Experience with crafting rituals for members around death and dying.
  • Experience with public witness for social justice
  • Experience in ministry in Unitarian Universalist congregations preferable

Responsibilities: The Sabbatical Minister will provide most of the services that the Congregation’s Parish Minister usually performs. These include:

Working with an established worship team to plan and lead worship services, including monthly evening vespers
Providing pastoral care to congregants and working with Pastoral Associates Team to organize pastoral services
Working with Sabbatical Committee to monitor management an administration of congregation, supervise staff, and provide guidance and feedback to worship ministries
