Justice Council is hosting Tash Nguyen and
Emily Harris from the Ella Baker Center
On June 10th at noon in Starr King Room.
They will talk about their current campaigns to reform the bail system in California and to audit our local Sheriff. Nationally, 1-in-3 people are sitting in jail simply because they cannot afford bail. In California, the median bail amount is $50,000! Staying in jail awaiting trial causes collateral damage to individuals, families, and communities. It starts a downward cycle of job loss, inability to pay rent, etc.
The Sheriff’s budget stands at $404 million! Under Sheriff Ahern there have been increasing deaths in the jails, abuse by sheriff’s deputies, and support of white supremacists from his department. Together, we can change this unjust system.
There have been calls from our pulpit and from the UUA to challenge white supremacy. Sometimes it is hard to know how to do that. Coming to hear about these campaigns and working to change the structural racism of the criminal justice system is taking a stand against white supremacy!
Please join us! There are many different levels of engagement! Please start by becoming educated about these important campaigns.
