Book Discussion Group
Our congregation has its own book discussion group! The group is hosted by long-time church member Emily Stoper and typically meets monthly.
Books for discussion are all nonfiction works, with a focus on the values and commitments of the work of the church. Topics include history, politics, psychology, science, and social diversity, among others. Usually, the book choices have less than 400 pages, so that there’s plenty of time to read it. On rare occasions, when we wish to read an important book that’s very long, we do it over two monthly meetings.
Meetings
The group meets on the 4th Thursday of most months, 6:30-8:30 p.m. – adjusting for holidays in November and December. Normally, meetings would be at the home of a church member, but with the pandemic, are now on Zoom.
There’s no need to commit to coming to every meeting. Feel free to attend only when the subject of the book is of interest to you. The group includes a number of very insightful regulars, so you are assured of a high-quality discussion every time. Drop-ins are warmly welcomed!
Getting Involved
Look for notices of upcoming book choices and meeting dates in church news. Sign up for the weekly church email newsletter (link in page footer below), or check the Congregation News page.
If you have questions, or to receive direct notifications about the group, contact Emily Stoper at bookgroup@uuoakland.org. A list of all the books we have read since we began meeting in 2006 is available on request.
