Holiday Card Writing, Wendte Hall, After Sunday Service
December 1, 2019 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Dec. 1, Holiday Card Writing, Wendte Hall, After Sunday Service
On December 1 during and after the church service, we will be joined by Rev. Ranwa Hammamy of the Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry of California (UUJMCA) for a special holiday project. The UUJMCA seeks to develop the skills of civic engagement and faith-rooted organizing so that UUs across California can educate, organize, and advocate for public policies that further our UU principles. Black & Pink is a nonprofit that organizes for the rights of LGTBQ+/HIV-positive individuals currently incarcerated in the prison industrial complex. UUJMCA is supporting Black & Pink in organizing holiday card writing parties to send cards to these incarcerated individuals.
On December 1, after the first part of the church service, Rev. Ranwa will join the children in the Starr King Room to share about this program and we’ll write cards with the children. Then when the adults come out of the service around 11:30 a.m., we will be set up in Wendte Hall so that adults can also write holiday cards to incarcerated individuals that are LGTBQ+/HIV-positive. We look forward to seeing you on December 1!

1st Sundays for Anti-racism and Anti-Oppression
December 1, 2019 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
First Sundays for Anti-racism and Anti-Oppression
Racial Identity Caucusing & Potluck
First Sunday of Every Month | 12:00 to 2:00 pm
Starr King Room
All are welcome. Potluck begins as soon as possible after worship service.
No need to bring food to participate. Childcare available upon request.
Racial identity is not shaped in a neutral environment. Caucusing provides supportive space where:
· Self-identified people of color explore how their identity forms in response to racial oppression.
· People who identify as white explore how their identity forms in response to white supremacy.
· People who identify as multiracial with white European ancestry may participate with the caucus of their choice or create another.
As people of faith on a spiritual journey toward wholeness, we gather to understand the dynamics of racial identity and to overcome barriers and oppression created by an individual, institutional, and cultural racism.
We warmly invite you to join us!
Sponsored by Journey Toward Wholeness Transformation Team. For more info contact jtw@uuoakland.org.

Learning Day: Satisfying, Joyful Church Service and Leadership
December 4, 2019 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Congregational life at First Unitarian Church of Oakland is a vibrant, busy experience. One of the things we can do to enrich our experiences of serving the community and the city is to focus on serving, as Frederick Buechner put it, in the “place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” All the ways that are possible for us to serve together have the possibility of contributing to this shared deep gladness. Are you interested in learning, exploring and thinking together about what factors support joyful, burn-out-free, church lay-leadership and service? Are happily settled in a leadership or service position currently? Are ready to change your leadership or service for the new year? Have not yet committed to church leadership or service? Are taking a break from church leadership and service? Are you wondering where your deep gladness connects to the congregation and its work? You are invited to participate in an exploration of the possibilities! Three different workshop dates offered (including a potluck meal at each):
Wednesday Dec. 4, 6:00 - 9:00 Tuesday Dec. 10, 6:00 - 9:00 We will share a meal together and explore how the elements of service, joy and skills can blend to create a culture of service which nourishes the spirit. ■ Worship: "When We Love Life Fiercely "
Worship: "When We Love Life Fiercely "
December 8, 2019 10:20 am - 11:30 am
What happens when we allow ourselves to open to a receptive love of the earth’s intricate web of life? When we recommit to this world as holy ground, can it inform how we care for one another and all life? In this season of awe, join Rev. Sheri as she draws from the ecotheology of Rev. Thomas Starr King to explore these questions. King was the minister of the First Unitarian Church of San Francisco from 1860 until his death in 1864. He believed that natural beauty had an invaluable role in the salvation of souls and indeed in the redemption of society from the spiritual decay of rampant materialism. He invited his parishioner to “bow reverently before the mountains.” King wrote that such awe-filled, contemplative absorption is “the spirit out of which the most efficient knowledge grows.” In the dark of winter as we prepare for the birth of a new possibility, let us be inspired by the spirit of one of our religious ancestors.
