Is Police Accountability Possible in Oakland?
July 28, 7:00 to 8:30 PM

The Justice Team and the Journey Towards Wholeness Anti-Racism Team join with Reverend Soto in inviting you to our first of several congregation-wide Zoom meetings about racial justice and policing. Representatives of the Coalition for Police Accountability will be in dialogue with us about their work on an upcoming ballot measure intended to correct the lack of independence and oversight power of the Police Commission. The live panel discussion will be followed by a question and answer period.

You will need a Zoom link to join. Please register at Eventbrite, where you also can find links to articles and videos that will provide context for the issues. You will receive a confirmation, and Zoom access will be sent to your email the day of the event. For more info, contact Helen Duffy.

The Coalition is the community organization that created the Police Commission with Measure LL on the 2016 Oakland ballot. In the period ahead we will offer additional perspectives about how to confront systemic racism and change public safety in the future.

The Film 13th and August First Sunday

Named for the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, 13th is an acclaimed documentary film by director Ava DuVernay that explores race, justice, and mass incarceration. You are invited to watch or re-watch 13th (currently free on YouTube and on Netflix) this month and to join the conversation about it at the upcoming First Sunday Gathering for Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression on August 2. Contact the Journey Toward Wholeness team with any question at jtw@uuoakland.org.
