Job Opening – Club UU Leader

UU Oakland Seeks a New Club UU Leader Starting February 23

Job Description

First Unitarian Church of Oakland is a spiritually alive, radically inclusive, justice-centered congregation in downtown Oakland. We are seeking a leader for our 6th-9th grade “Club UU.”

The Club UU Leader leads the group at First Unitarian on Sunday mornings (3-4 times a month) from 10:15 to 11:45.

On Sundays when there is a story for all ages in the main worship service, the Club UU leader attends worship in Hamilton Hall with the 6th-9th graders and other children and then takes their group to the Club UU room when the children and youth leave the worship service. On Sundays when there is a children’s chapel, Club UU begins at 10:20, as the youth do not attend chapel. When there is an multigenerational worship service (about once/month), Club UU does not meet.

The Club UU Leader leads activities and discussions in order to 1) help the youth grow in their connections with and respect for each other, 2) explore questions of identity, spirituality, purpose, and meaning in their lives (each month at First Unitarian has a spiritual theme to explore), 3) integrate UU values, and 4) have fun!

2019-2020 Focus on service projects to church and community

2020-2021 Focus on learning about and visiting other faith traditions in the area

Necessary qualifications:

  • Successful experience working with groups of youth and a ready ability to connect and build rapport with middle school youth.
  • Strong group leadership skills with a diverse group of youth.
  • A schedule that allows for consistently being available to lead Club UU on Sunday mornings.
  • Ability to uphold UU values and the mission of UU Oakland
  • Good communication skills.

Compensation is $50/week when there is Club UU, which is designed to include some prep time.
