"End the War" Banner Unveiling, 5/27/07

"This call for a worldwide fellowship that lifts neighborly concerns beyond one's tribes, race, class and nation is in reality a call for an all-embracing and "unconditional" love for all mankind. We can no longer afford to worship the God of hate or bow before the altar of "retaliation". The oceans of history are made turbulent by the ever-rising tides of hate. History is cluttered with the wreckage of nations and individuals that pursued this self-defeating path of hate."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., April 4, 1967, Riverside Church

You can read the very moving, inspiring words that Reverend Kathy Huff spoke at the Stop the War Banner Unveiling event on May 27, 2007.

Ten Things You Can Do to Help Stop the War in Iraq

  1. Write to the President. Tell him we need to stop the war now. Use U.S. Mail. Address: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20500. Also, write your senators and congressional representatives – Yes, again! (House of Representatives: Washington, DC 20515. Senate zip: 20206)
  2. Learn about the positive impact and examples of courage that can affect people you will talk to and break though the apathy. Set aside a time in your busy schedule to check out web sites such as unitedforpeaceandjustice.org, afsc.org, and the links they provide.
  3. Call up friends and relatives you haven't spoken to about this. Reconnect. Find out how they are feeling about the war. Remind them, especially those in more conservative congressional districts, that they are in an especially good position to have an impact if they will express themselves in local newspapers and to their elected officials.
  4. Ask the administration of your child's high school to make a waiver process available and known to parents who DON'T want their children contacted by military recruiters. Ask that the waivers be made available in the languages of the families.
  5. Display a sign or symbol of your opposition to the war in places that promote dialogue: your work cubicle, your laptop or the cover of the appointment calendar that you take to meetings.
  6. Put a sign or banner in your front yard, on your porch, or on your front door. (A Colorado couple sparked a national movement by the press they received when their condo association tried to fine them for displaying a lighted peace symbol last December).
  7. Donate a day's pay to a veteran's anti-war group.
  8. Get your club, civic group, professional group or other organizations to pass a resolution against continued US occupation of Iraq. Send copies of the resolution to Speaker Pelosi, your representatives, and to the news publications of the organization and other press.
  9. Make a commitment to end the war a requirement for any national candidate you support. Inform the candidates and your party that an unequivocal position to end the war is essential for your support.
  10. Dig in and keep the faith even if this takes longer than we hope. The war will end when sustained, organized opposition makes it impossible to continue. Join and keep working with people in your area who are organizing for peace.
