Church Councils

There are five Councils in the organizational structure of the church. Each covers a specific area of activity within the community. And each welcomes new people to become involved -- in small or big ways. Read below about the work of each council and what activities they are involved with.

Membership Council

The Membership Council is an excellent area for newcomers (and others) to take a first step toward being involved in our community. Some of the ways you could provide service (and at the same time, get to know people) include:
  • Staffing the hospitality table in front of the church to help us greet guests
  • Serving as an usher
  • Staffing the welcoming table in Wendte Hall
  • Greeting other guests and making them feel welcome
  • Working at the bookstore
  • Serving on the Membership Council
  • Helping at Ingathering luncheons

Most of these would involve only a once-a-month commitment. Consider getting involved. Contact Renee Harper, Membership Convenor, at reh577@sbcglobal.net. And learn more about how to become a member of our church community.

Social Justice Council

First Unitarian Church of Oakland received the Moral Beacon Award from the Pacific Central District of UU Churches in April, 2007. This award recognizes our "extraordinary courage and commitment in the work of creating a better world" through our many Justice programs and through our culture of generosity (of time, spirit, and money). We are proud to have been recognized on behalf of all the church members and friends who work to make our community and our world a better place.

The social justice council develops church policy with respect to justice activities, approves projects and training budgets. They also co-ordinate activities with other church ministries such as worship, community life and religious education. The council is comprised of representatives from other groups in the church that have a stake in justice activities. Check out their many activities. It is very likely there is one where you could offer your gifts. Note: Anyone interested in inter-faith community organizing is invited to email oaklandben@sbcglobal.net or call him at 510-420-8864.

For more information about social justice activities, email Emily Stoper, Justice Convenor, at emily.stoper@csueastbay.edu or call her at 510-459-7048.

Community Life Council

A primary goal of the Community Life Council is to build and enhance our beloved community. Through a series of annual events, members come together to get to know one another better, to meet new members and friends, and to learn and have fun in community. Read about some of the specific events this council sponsors. These events are wonderful opportunities to get your feet wet as a volunteer. Working on a specific event is a time-limited commitment -- and seeing the community come together for something you worked on can provide great satisfaction.

Lifespan Education and Programs Council (LEAP)

This council works with the Education Minister to develop educational opportunities for children, adults, and children and adults together. Volunteers are always welcome. Your time and ideas are welcome in many areas. You might choose to help in a children's class or offer to teach a class for adults. You can work with Rev. Michelle and the LEAP Council Convenor, Darlene Pagano (dpagano@igc.org), to plan future programs. You might offer to be a "Guest Star" teaching the children a specific skill or interest one Sunday during the summer. Or you might choose to get involved in one of our Community Learning Days. Email re@uuoakland.org to learn more about any of these opportunities. And see our current educational programs for adults and children.

Worship Council

Getting involved in this area is truly rewarding. More than 50 people are actively involved in our Music Programs, singing, playing instruments, and helping to coordinate music for all worship services and many other activities. The other way to get involved is to become a Worship Associate, to work with the ministers to create meaningful worship. Learn more about this meaningful work. Or contact Kristen Montan, Worship Convenor, at krmontan@earthlink.net.
